Website Usability

Design

The WordPress theme has a dark black theme, with round white blocks that repeat every four columns. The blocks are wrapped in black borders on all four sides. The text is a grey gradient. The only real eye catching design element is the center text area which features a rich green font and multi-colored circles, making it bright and colorful. For information on WordPress themes, see our previous article about why you should never use free themes.

The WordPress theme is supported only by WordPress.org installations. I would like to mention that the theme uses the versatile IconsPlus icon fonts, which also supports many more customization options including custom fonts. If you need more information on icons in WordPress, see the article from my colleague Jason Ellis. The theme requires WordPress version 3.0 or newer, although it can be tweaked a little on older versions.

Toolbars

The user will also notice the toolbars at the top of the theme. Below the toolbars you’ll notice the menu for the widget manager and support boxes. When you click on a widget on the widget manager, it will instantly open up a dialog window to help you customize it. In this case, the widget will be a YouTube widget that offers to add it to the site. The dialog is very helpful and easily manipulated. There are also other ways to customize the theme to add new widgets or configure them in different ways. This includes the settings area, which allows you to add and change various settings such as default themes, background colors, fonts, permissions, and more.

Widget Features

If you are a front-end developer and want to extend the widget features, you can install the WidgetUpdater plugin. It will allow you to set the colors and fonts, as well as set new features on the theme. For example, if you want to install the overlay panel widget, you can install the builder plugin and then use a builder like the one below. You can change the logo, add more widgets, and modify the behavior for each widget. As you can see in the screenshot below, the widget builder is very handy and will add tons of customization options on the theme and will make adding widgets and making changes to them a breeze.

Usability Features

The WordPress theme has a custom form theme with five columns for each form element. You can use the special default styling by changing the box sizing by changing the width of the div. The div will also change as you change the width of the form. For more information, see the custom styling page in the sidebar of the website. The theme also supports multi-column form layouts which allow you to create multiple columns of buttons for different features. If you have any issues with multi-column form layouts, see our previous article on how to customize multi-column form layouts. If you have any questions about this feature or the layout itself, let me know in the comments below.

Responsive Features

The WordPress theme has many features to help the site function as an optimal front-end framework for mobile devices. If you are building a site that is responsive, the theme can help you create many different layouts on different devices. The designers at Acuity add very important features like easing transitions and the ability to create complex CSS layout techniques. The theme comes with more than 70 responsive built-in CSS features that can be used directly with custom CSS or with the WordPress customizer tools. You can read the responsive tips in the articles from our previous article.

Speed

Although it’s not strictly a website feature, website speed is just as important for good usability. That comes down to solid web hosting like Bluehost.

A flexible header, footer, and toolbar.

A very flexible main menu. You can change the header size, extend it vertically and horizontally, and switch between different layouts.

A collapsible sidebar. If you need the sidebar, you can split it vertically, horizontally, or use it in a grid layout.
